Mom Remade Born
Mom Remade was born in the car a couple of months ago. I had just dropped my last child off at college. Her college is far away. It took a total of 3 hard days to get her settled in and drive home.
When driving in the car for that long, a mom has a lot of time to think. There was a sense of closure and sadness, but also a sense of freedom and relief that both of my kids are alive and graduated from high school. They have successfully made it through this thing called childhood.
What do I do now?
As an empty nester, I felt lost and, well, empty. I kept asking myself, “What do I do now?” I knew I wanted to continue to work with kids as a teacher, but I felt I could do more. My deepest desire is to help the parents right behind me. Perhaps warn them about a few of the land mines up ahead.
Truthfully, I am grateful my husband and I are still alive and happily married after going through some of the things we experienced as parents. (And we didn’t self-combust in the process.) I really had no idea how hard parenting 2 kids was going to be. It has been the most rewarding job but the most difficult job. It’s still hard sometimes even though my kids are adults.
I love how my kids have turned out but getting there was not so easy. Ok, it was just plain painful at times. (They are still a work in progress). Have you ever watched the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote? I kinda feel my kids were like the Roadrunner, and my husband and I were like the Coyote.
Picture the scene after some TNT just blew up on the Coyote. The Coyote is still alive, but the hair is sticking up everywhere and there are a few burn marks showing. And lots of smoke. Smoke is blowing around everywhere. Remember the face the Coyote makes after it all blows up on him? He looks around and wonders what just happened. It was all going so well.
Parenting can be that way. Most days are normal and nothing happens, but in a matter of minutes something blows up and next thing you know-you’re on fire.
So what is a parent to do when everything is on fire? Do you continue to go down in flames or go back to the drawing board like the Coyote does and try again? Mom Remade is the drawing board. It is a place to help you to go back and try again.
Mom Remade and How It Will Help You
I started Mom Remade for two reasons:
1). I knew immediately I wanted to help other parents and encourage them along the way in the parenting process. (Improve and remake)
The tagline says it all. “Encouraging mothers…from the other side of parenthood.”
2). I love writing, speaking, and encouraging woman. It is a remaking of a second career since I am now an empty nester.
Most people just look back when their kids are grown and say, “Whew, glad that’s over.” They don’t realize they have a wealth of knowledge in parenting just by hard knocks. Parents learn by mistakes as well as their successes. If you are reading this thinking that I have all the answers and my kids are perfect, then just click off NOW!
This is your first lesson: Parenting is a process. In fact, I write this blog with sheer fear and trembling knowing that I am never done as a parent. Things could still happen.
Nevertheless, my thought is, “Why not share some of what I have learned as a parent?” As they say in the Army, “Leave no man behind.” I feel like it is my duty to help other people along in the parenting journey as I have been helped.
Mom Remade With Humor
Parenting is fun and it can be funny. My kids are really kind to let me write about them. They have done plenty of things that are worth sharing and are humorous.
My husband, he’s not so excited for me to blab about him. (Read the 2 blogs about the Mouse In the House. I really got him.) Hopefully, reading about my family will help you to laugh a little and realize you are not alone. All of us have had bad days and feel like hiding in a box.
When you come out from hiding, just know that there are others who have gone before you and know how you feel. Some of you have a few years under your belt. I welcome you to comment below and add your 2 cents worth. No one person has all the goods on this gig. Kids are wired differently. And so are parents. We all need to collaborate to get the job done.
Mom Remade: Parenting Foundation
What you will find in my blogs, after I am laughing at myself or my family, is God. Pure and simple. Without God, I believe it is impossible to parent wisely. I still get in God’s way from time to time, but I am trying to listen to his voice! It is the one thing I know is true.
The Bible is a guide to help instill solid morals and values so when Johnny is faced with difficult situations, he can refer back to it and make good judgment calls. I am so grateful there is a place to go when things get tough. My family would all be lost without God. I pray you find something wise I’ve said in these writings, and it will make your life better.
